Love Fulfills Law – Romans 13:8

“Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.” – Romans 13:8

As we journey in our Christian walk, everyday, it unravels to us how gracious God is. The nearer we walk with God, the more we understand that we really need a Savior. Although before we were once proud people who thought that we can do everything and we don’t need anyone, now, we are dependent on God. We don’t like to accept the fact that we are in need of someone to save us, but the moment we pledge our life to Jesus Christ, we accept that we need Christ to be our Savior.

Now, our verse today reminds us that we should not let any debt remain outstanding except the debt to love one another for it fulfills the law. This verse is actually very hard to understand at first read. We might get confused because as Christians, we know that we are under grace. Law is not the basis for our salvation anymore because we know that no one can ever perfect law. Since breaking one law is guilty of breaking all of them, thus this just proves that we never perfect the Mosaic law.

Therefore, this is the reason why Jesus Christ came to the world to save us from our sins. He came to save us and to give us our salvation but we have to remember that our salvation comes only from Him. Now, the law is not only our basis for salvation anymore, but it is the tool to point us to our sins and to make us understand that we need Jesus Christ, that we need a Savior. So, since we know this already, Jesus has also summed up the Mosaic law into two big groups. Which is to love God with all our hearts, minds, strength and soul and to love one another as ourselves.

Thus, the fulfillment of the law is indeed love. Again, our salvation depends on Jesus Christ alone and through Him only we can be saved. So, after knowing this, we are now changed and have a new life in which we follow God’s commandment. Therefore, as we desire to follow God now, we follow His commandments and the fulfillment of the law is indeed love. We are ought to love God and to love one another as ourselves. Indeed that we should not let any debt to be outstanding except from the debt of love towards one another. Through this, we will be able to love one another always.

If we always put our minds into having debt to love one another, then we will be driven to love always. Indeed that as Christians, we have to extend the love of Christ in our lives towards others. We have to remember always that His love cannot be contained so we should not hoard it. Therefore, may we not forget to love one another and to show the love of Christ through our lives. Let us fulfill the law through loving for it is already by grace we are saved. We are not loving so we will be saved but we love because we are saved and we have experienced true love first hand.
