The Shedding of Blood – Hebrews 9:22

“In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.” – Hebrews 9:22

We all know that in the Old Testament, blood was always used as a binding agent. It is used to make a covenant, to bind something, or to even use it as revenge. Now, we have to remember also that for the people to be forgiven before, God requires the people to sacrifice the blood of an unblemished lamb. If this is done, then they will be forgiven. So, we know that the law indeed requires the shedding of blood to have forgiveness and without it, there is no forgiveness. It takes the blood of an innocent lamb to be shed so the people can have forgiveness.

Now, because of our sinfulness, we need forgiveness. We need God to forgive us, but there is always a price. However, we cannot offer a clean lamb anymore. After all, it is not just only forgiveness that we need, but also eternal life– our salvation. So, we have to understand our verse today in a deeper manner. We have to understand what the writer meant by this. The writer of Hebrews clearly puts the clear connection between the old testament time and the time of the new covenant. Since the new covenant is all about how God promised to save us not through the sacrificing of innocent lambs, but through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ as our innocent lamb.

The writer established the right picture in our mind that people in the old times were really sacrificing lambs to ask for the forgiveness of God. Thus, there is still the need to shed blood. Our sins are far greater so the law requires us to have shedding of blood. So, God with His plan to save us, gave us His Son to be our personal lamb, and He was slain because of our sins. Thus, the law has been appeased and now we are not under the law but under grace.

Yet we always have to remember that this is the grace of God. We need the forgiveness of God because we are sinful, but He has still given us grace. We sinned, we disobeyed Him, but still, He is the One who found the way to save us. Can you fathom that love? It is indeed unfathomable and beyond comprehension! Therefore, let us always remember that without Christ– our Lord and Savior, we will be condemned and we will be suffering the consequences of our sins. But since He loves us so much, He appeased the law and put us under His grace. He shed His own blood so we can have forgiveness and we can be with Him in His paradise. So, let us praise God for His wonderful salvation and His loving grace. Let us thank Christ for His sacrifice and for the blood He shed for us and praise the Holy Spirit for always comforting us and leading us the way to salvation.
