Rooted in Christ, Rooted in Love – Ephesians 3:17

“so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love” – Ephesians 3:17
For the past few days, we have reflected about us being people of Christ, who are part of His body. Since we are all part of His body who has different functions, we are to carry each other’s burden. Through this, we will be fulfilling the law which is to love one another. Now, we are going to continue reflecting on this love and about how much more we can show it. In our verse today, it is taken from the book of Ephesians, which is the letter that Paul wrote to the Ephesians.
Paul clearly shows in this verse how much he cares for his brothers and sisters in Christ. He wrote a prayer for them that may the Lord strengthen them with the Spirit so that Christ will dwell in their hearts through faith. Also, he prayed for them that they will be rooted and established in love. First of all, Paul was really a person who was so good at outlining ideas. As we can notice in this prayer, he clearly stated first that may Christ dwell in our hearts richly through faith.
We can also remember a verse from another book of the Word of God about letting the Word dwell in us richly. Which just shows that Christ and the Word of God is one. For again, He is the Word incarnate. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). Thus, as Paul stated this prayer for the Ephesians, he carefully mentioned letting Christ dwell in our hearts richly through faith first. Then, he prayed that we will be rooted and established in love. Indeed we can see through this that it is perfectly outlined based on the right process.
If Paul has to mention that we should be rooted and established in love before we will have Christ dwell in our lives richly, it will just make us misunderstand that through loving, we will gain Christ. We must always remember that loving is very critical and tricky. All of us have our own way of loving, most of the time, we love with the wrong love we learned from this world. Thus, we must follow the proper process. For us to be rooted and established in love, we must first have Christ dwell in us richly.
Let us first let the Word of God dwell in us, strengthen us so that we will be able to love right and fully. We will be able to love one another and fulfill the law only through having Christ in us. Therefore, may we all have this prayer for everybody that every one of us will have Christ dwell in us richly so that we will be rooted and established in love. As we are rooted and established in love, everything follows. We will then be able to do what we are called to do which is to spread the Gospel because we will now care for the people around us because we love them.
