Overcoming the World Through the Word- 1 John 5:4

“for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” – 1 John 5:4

Most of the time, we have the wrong mindset about how sin is overcoming us. We always say that we cannot do anything about it every time we sin because we are sinful by nature. It’s like we are owning up to our mistakes, but we are instantly giving ourselves a free pass saying that it is because we are sinful by nature, we are allowed to sin. However, our verse today is teaching us something different. John specifically said that everyone born of God overcomes the world.

We all know the famous verse about Jesus telling us to take heart because He has overcome the world. Since we all know this, we must really understand that indeed if we are already born of God, then we are also overcomers of the world. As Christians, we should not give ourselves some lame excuses like we are naturally sinful so it is okay that we will sin over and over again. Thus, we must really understand if we are in Christ, we must also become like Him who is an overcomer of the world.

Although we have to understand that it is not because we are good and we are great that’s why we will overcome the world, it is because of the power of Christ. Let us understand that the victory we have to overcome the world is the faith we have in Christ. It is not just merely because we are good by nature. The reason why we can overcome the world is that we have Christ in us. The first and only step of overcoming the world is first to have Christ deep inside us. Through the righteousness and purity of Christ that we received when we accept Him as our Lord and Savior, we are made righteous and overcomers of the world.

Therefore, as people who are already in Christ Jesus our Lord, we must desire to become more and more like Him. He has overcome the world, so we must also become overcomers of the world so that we will be able to preach the Word of God through our lives. We must never become so lax or make lame excuses that we are sinful by nature that’s why we let the world overcome us. Instead, let us always remember that our Lord and Savior has overcome the world, so as we desire to become more and more like Him, we can also overcome the world through Him alone. After all, even this victory is the grace of God that we are undeserving to receive.
