Our Gifts, All By Grace – ROMANS 12:3-8

”For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function.” Read Romans 12:3-8
Biblical humility is this – do not think highly of yourself better than others, just as you thought as you are. In our journey since toddler, we have been raised to develop gifts and are rewarded with our gifts of talents and skills, in fact, similarly in schools, awards are given to those with exemplary performance, which is a good thing and can be motivation to desire to be better. However, in this context, as the apostle Paul encourages, that as a community of believers, each of us has its own gifting as revealed and bestowed to us by the Holy Spirit. Simply, Paul put it this way – there isn’t a greater gift that can lead us to think that we are better than the others, but rather, as one body in Christ, just as the physical body that each parts has its own function and purposes.
And as Paul added, do not think highly of yourself but rather, think of yourself with sober judgement, discern rightly, for whatever we have is a product of God’s grace and mercy, in which he bestowed gifts to each one of us for the purpose of his glory. Best to remind ourselves that we do not deserve this, but only by grace, we have this.
