Journey to the Cross: A Lenten Devotional

Scripture: Matthew 16:24
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

Reflection:
Lent is a season of preparation, reflection, and renewal. It is a time when we journey toward the cross, remembering Christ’s sacrifice and our call to follow Him in faith and obedience. Jesus’ words in Matthew 16:24 remind us that discipleship requires self-denial, carrying our own cross, and walking in His footsteps.

In a world that constantly encourages self-fulfillment and comfort, Lent challenges us to embrace a different path—a path of humility, repentance, and deeper dependence on God. Fasting, prayer, and acts of service during this season help us realign our hearts with Christ’s mission and cultivate a spirit of surrender.

As we prepare for Easter, let us take time to examine our hearts. Are there areas where we need to let go of control and trust God more fully? Are there distractions keeping us from drawing near to Him? Lent is an opportunity to intentionally set aside what hinders our walk with God and fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Application:

  1. Deny Yourself – Identify something that may be taking priority over your relationship with God and consider fasting from it this Lent.
  2. Take Up Your Cross – Embrace challenges or sacrifices as a way to grow in faith and obedience.
  3. Follow Jesus – Spend time daily in Scripture and prayer, drawing near to Christ and seeking His will for your life.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, as we journey through this Lenten season, help us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow You with renewed devotion. Reveal to us areas where we need to surrender, and strengthen us to walk in obedience. May this time of reflection draw us closer to Your heart and prepare us for the joy of resurrection morning. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Thought:
Lent is not merely about what we give up, but about what we gain—a deeper, more intimate relationship with Christ. May this season lead us to greater faith, renewed hope, and an unwavering love for our Savior.
