Blessed Man – Psalm 1:2

“but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” – Psalm 1:2
The first verse of the first chapter of Psalm describes what a blessed man shouldn’t do and while our verse today describes what a blessed man should do. This verse continues to describe what a blessed man should do and what are his characteristics. Yet, we may think that it takes a lot to become a blessed man and to live a life of a blessed man, well we are wrong.
The only thing God expects a blessed man to do is to delight himself in His law and meditate on His Word day and night. Well, this sounds so easy but it is actually not. For the past months, we have learned that the men’s condition is really sinful and rebellious. It is very hard for us to obey and to follow rules. How much more of this?
It is not easy because delighting in God’s law does not only mean desiring to follow Him but the word ‘delight’ means to ‘bend’. Delighting means also bending on to God’s law. So, we must understand that delighting in the law of God means becoming pliable, teachable and a listener. A blessed man must be moldable, bendable and teachable. This verse also does not mean or refer to males only but for all of us. The description of what a blessed man shouldn’t do and should do is for all of us.
We must understand that the Word of God is correct, final and firm. It is the full and final revelation of God to mankind. A love letter from God that consists of how we should live our lives and the instructions on how we should wait for His coming. Therefore, as people who look forward to His second coming we must always remember this do’s and don’ts that God has outlined for us.
Why do we follow this? Are we blessed men? Why do we have to do this? We thought that the only way we should do is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ? Well, indeed! We need to follow this; we are blessed men; we have to do this; and yes, we only have to believe in the death and resurrection of Christ.
However, we must remember that the only way that made us blessed men was through the death and resurrection of Christ. Through our faith in Jesus, we are chosen by God and blessed by God. Therefore, as people who truly believe in His death and resurrection, it will overflow in us. It will manifest in us and it will give us the desire to delight in God’s Word and to meditate on it day and night.
Of course doing good things does not save us, but through the meditation of the Word of God, it will reveal to us the true path of salvation which is Jesus Christ. Also, we must understand that the Word is Jesus Christ for the Word became flesh and dwelt among us (John 1). So, as people who are blessed by God, we should delight ourselves in His law and meditate on His Word day and night.
Meditating on the Word of God means fully immersing into His Word always. Bending and following what God has written to it. It is indeed useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. As people who are clothed in the righteousness of Christ, meditating on His Word will help us understand more how it is to become more like Christ and at the same time, we are giving the Holy Spirit the chance to renew and cleanse us every time.
Therefore, we must always remember that delighting means also being pliable, bending and teachable. So we must be teachable and we must always remember to meditate on the Word of God. Busyness is never an excuse for us to set aside this because God will always give us enough time to spend our time with Him. Let us draw nearer to God and meditate on His Word non-stop.
