When Excellence Feels Like a Burden

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
— Matthew 11:28-29

Reflection:
At elite universities, excellence is often the standard, not the goal. Deadlines, internships, leadership roles, and GPA pressures can leave you feeling like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. The expectations from professors, peers, and even yourself can become overwhelming, and it’s easy to believe that your worth is tied to your achievements.

But Jesus offers a different perspective. He invites you to exchange the heavy yoke of performance for His gentle and humble leadership. His yoke is not one of striving, but of trust. It’s not about earning approval—it’s about receiving grace.

When excellence feels like a burden, remember: Your value doesn’t come from the grades you achieve or the accolades you collect. It comes from the God who created you, loves you, and calls you His own. In Him, there is rest—not because your circumstances are easy, but because His strength carries you through.

Prayer:
Lord, I confess that I often feel like my worth is tied to what I accomplish. Thank You for reminding me that my identity is in You, not in my achievements. Help me to rest in Your strength and surrender my burdens to You. Teach me to walk in Your peace, even in the busiest seasons. Amen.

Action Step:
This week, take five minutes each day to practice “resting” in God’s presence. Find a quiet space, breathe deeply, and release your worries to Him in prayer. Reflect on this truth: You are loved because of who God is, not because of what you do.

Write down one area of your life where you feel burdened by expectations. Ask God to guide you in releasing that burden and trusting Him with the outcome.
